Let's Celebrate Black History in Cornwall and Beyond: a conversation with Golden Glove Boxing Champion & Boxing Hall of Famer Spider Jones

People of African descent have been a part of shaping Canada’s heritage and identity since the arrival of Mathieu Da Costa, a navigator, and interpreter, whose presence in the land we know today as Canada dates back to the early 1600s.

CUREA - Coalition for Unity, Respect, Equality/Equity for All is pleased to host Charles “Spider” Jones, a Canadian journalist, radio host, motivational speaker, and former amateur boxer as he explores Black history in Cornwall, Ontario, and beyond. He will be commemorating the lives of many Black Canadians in Eastern Ontario such as:

John Baker - formerly enslaved  and soldier who lived in Cornwall who fought with the 104th Regiment of the British Crown Forces;

Bob Turner - a former member of the Harlem Globetrotters and Chicago White Sox, and Canada's first Black municipal director in Cornwall;

Willie Eldon O'Ree - the first Black player in the NHL, who played for the Kingston Frontenacs;

Robert Sutherland - the first Black student at Queen's College (now Queen's University), and many others.
